Borsari 1870 is a museum that traces the history of the Borsari company, one of the Italian perfumery excellences, with products appreciated all over
the world. Lodovico Borsari founded the company around 1870 in the Convent of the Annunciata. Here, years previously, Maria Luigia had asked the friars to prepare a perfume distilled with the essence of Parma violets, of which Maria Luigia made extensive use. For years the friars kept the secret formula of the perfume, but Lodovico Borsari, visiting the monastery, he managed to
convince them to reveal the secret method. Using the formula obtained by the friars and reworking it, he began to produce, in the shop where he worked together with his partner Dario Sacc ò, an
essence called “Violetta di Parma ”, which was an extraordinary success among the ladies of Parma. In 1897 he decided to start an industrial business on his own and to expand the range of
fragrances. The industry was born “Borsari & Figli ”, destined to become in a short time an absolute reference point of the Italian perfumery art. Borsari complex, founded three years later outside the Garibaldi gate. In 1934 the Borsari company moved to via Trento, in the building that still houses the Borsari 1870 collection, the “ First Italian Perfumery Museum
”, which has opened its doors to the public since 1990. 100 years of company history, but which also contains precious testimonies relating to Italian art, graphics, costumes and perfumes from 1870 to 1950. The interior space reflects the taste in the wall decorations, floors and furnishings that links the Liberty to Dec ò, while all the objects exhibited in the museum, the splendid glass bottles, the boxes, the posters, the scented calendars, the postcards, are testimony to the evolution of taste and design in the arc of
decades of activity. The Borsari company has in fact always shown to give particular attention to packaging, design and communication: Borsari had the intuition to make use, over the years, of the collaboration of internationally renowned designers and painters for the study of packaging, bottle lines and advertising communication. In the
first production cycle of the perfume “Violetta di Parma ”, for example, glass and crystal containers have exclusive lines and shapes that interpret the evolution of the style from Liberty to Art Deco: the glasses are finely carved with satin bands that move the body of the bottle and enhance the color of the essence; the caps are in ground glass, as a natural complement to the whole. The packaging is accurate, with a protective film around the neck and the gold thread seal; the floral taste label is precious and embossed; the box has a complex construction that highlights the perspectives and the shape of the bottle and is forced with papers made with the most sophisticated techniques and printed in multiple colors with avant-garde graphics.
